Plastic yielding of glass in high-pressure torsion apparatus

2018

International audience; Hardness measurements performed at room temperature have demonstrated that glass can flow under elevated pressure, whereas the effect of high pressure on glass rheology remains poorly quantified. Here, we applied a high-pressure torsion (HPT) apparatus to deform SCHOTT SF6 â glass and attempted to quantify the effect of pressure and temperature on the shear deformation of glass subjected to pressures from 0.3 GPa to 7 GPa and temperatures from 25 ℃ to 496 ℃. Results show that the plastic yield deformation was occurring during the HPT experiments on the SF6 glass at elevated temperature from 350 ℃ to 496 ℃. The yield stress of SF6 glass decreases with increasing tempe…

Mechanochemical Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, and X-ray Structures of N-Heteroacenes

2016

The described mechanochemical methodology is an example of a proof-of-concept in which solution-based tedious, poor yielding, and difficult syntheses of pyrazaacenes are achieved under solvent-free ball-milling conditions; the method is easy, high yielding, time-efficient, and environmentally benign. The synthesized compounds also include pyrazaacenes (N-heteroacenes) that are octacene analogues containing pyrene building blocks. The compounds were sparingly soluble in common solvents, and column chromatographic purifications could be avoided after the solvent-free syntheses. The UV/Vis absorption spectra of the pyrazaacenes show intense absorption bands in the near-IR region. The single-cr…

3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyrrole-2-carbonitriles: Useful Intermediates in the Synthesis of Fused Pyrroles and 2,2′-Bipyrroles

2016

Various heterocyclic structures containing the pyrrole moiety have been synthesized from easily accessible 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-2-carbonitriles in one-pot procedures. 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydroindolizines, 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolizines as well as 6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepines were obtained from these precursors in high yields in an alkylation/annulation sequence. The same conditions were applied in the synthesis of a 5,8-dihydroindolizine, which could easily be transformed to the corresponding indolizine by dehydrogenation. Furthermore, oxidative couplings of 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-2-carbonitriles with copper(II)-salts furnished 2,2'-bipyrroles as well as 5,5'-bis(5-cyano-1-pyrroline…

A Xylochemically Inspired Synthesis of Lamellarin G Trimethyl Ether via an Enaminone Intermediate.

2019

A concise high yielding synthesis of lamellarin G trimethyl ether has been achieved from precursors and solvents that can in principle be derived from xylochemical (woody biomass) sources. The route is comparatively green in that some reactions are performed without solvent or with relatively benign solvents. In addition, chromatographic purification of products is avoided, and only a single aqueous workup is performed. The novelty of the synthesis lies in the intermediacy of an enaminone for the construction of the central pyrrole ring. The overall yield of the product is among the highest reported to date.

Synthesis of potentially anti-inflammatory IPL576,092-contignasterol and IPL576,092-manoalide hybrids

2004

The synthesis of two potentially anti-inflammatory steroidal hybrid compounds has been accomplished through a 16- and 17-step sequence, respectively, starting from commercially available androst-5-en-3β-ol-17-one. The synthetic strategies are based both on stereoselective side chains elaboration and high yielding functional group transformations.

Mechanical behaviour of Palermo and Marsala calcarenites (Sicily), Italy

2016

Abstract This paper aims at finding a framework for the Sicilian Calcarenites relating the strength and the deformability of these materials to their geological and structural features: fabric, bonding, initial and actual specific volume. In particular, this study sets out to separate the effects of fabric and of bonding on the mechanical response. The investigated lithotypes, Calcarenites from Palermo and Marsala, outcropping in many areas of southwestern Sicily, are characterized by sudden changes in their deformability, strength and permeability characteristics. The geotechnical identification, by means of computerized axial tomography and thin section petrographic analysis suggested a s…

18F-Labeling Using Click Cycloadditions

2014

Due to expanding applications of positron emission tomography (PET) there is a demand for developing new techniques to introduce fluorine-18 (t1/2=109.8 min). Considering that most novel PET tracers are sensitive biomolecules and that direct introduction of fluorine-18 often needs harsh conditions, the insertion of18F in those molecules poses an exceeding challenge. Two major challenges during18F-labeling are a regioselective introduction and a fast and high yielding way under mild conditions. Furthermore, attention has to be paid to functionalities, which are usually present in complex structures of the target molecule. The Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and several copper…

Efficacy of spot form of net blotch suppression in barley from seed, fertiliser and foliar applied fungicides

2022

Abstract Spot form of net blotch (SFNB), caused by Pyrenophora teres f. maculata is a prevalent and damaging foliar disease of barley (Hordeum vulgare). Fungicides are commonly used to manage SFNB infection and reduce production loss in susceptible varieties. This study determined the efficacy of suppression of SFNB and associated grain yield and quality improvements from application of fungicides to seed, fertiliser and/or foliar treatments. Eight field experiments were conducted in south-eastern Australia during 2016–2018. Two experiments compared single applications of different commercially available seed, fertiliser and foliar fungicides. Six experiments evaluated different growth stag…

INFLUENZA DEL FABRIC E DEL BONDING SULLO STATO CRITICO E SULLO SNERVAMENTO DELLE CALCARENITI

2011

The research has been devoted to the theoretical interpretation and to the modeling of the mechanical behavior of Quaternary structured soils in the Western South-Western Sicily belonging to the complex calcarenitic-sandy-clayey. After a review about the state of knowledge on the influence of textural characteristics such as fabric and bonding on mechanical behavior, this note presents the results of an experimental analysis by mean of textural identification tests, oedometer tests, triaxial and isotropic tests. For each lithotype critical state conditions and yield strength are defined.

The Effects of Structure on the One Dimensional Compression Behaviour of a Porous Calcarenite

2019

Human settlements built on weak rock deposits are often characterized by instabilities or collapse that may involve the underground cavities and consequently the above buildings. Underground calcarenite quarries in Marsala have been involved in a number of collapses that have seriously damaged numerous buildings. Unfortunately proper engineering solutions have not yet been identified according to the different and special cases and to the properties of this structured material. In order to investigate structure effects on the behaviour of the porous calcarenite of Marsala, this paper presents a comparison between the one dimensional compression behaviour of the intact rock and of the same w…
